Entrance Facade Massing Studies

In this concept I'm working on cutting the corner of the studio space and continuing the exhibit hall form through the first story to help focus the public around the corner to the front entrance.

In this massing study I've rounded the corner of the studio space and see the main entrance canopy focused more toward the corner of Mass. Ave.

I've sutdied all the rotations of the main building and find this angle most successful. I would like to further study the previous two massings as this breaks the smooth forms a little to much. This study is not done however and this may be valid.

Matt,
i had to go back and forth between the current model and your earlier work before understanding the suddelties of your proposal to address the main entrance better. It might have something to do with the large roof on top of the classroom building, as it tilts away as if showing the "cold shoulder". I think the roof top and the entrance canopy will fight for attention. You possibly might need a different solution for th eentrance (tunnel, portal, guiding wall, et cetera) or address the entrance with the main roof?
A few things I would like you to look at too: currently you are showing a lot of area dedicated to circulation: 3 staris, double elevator, stair/ramp combo. i would hope you could reduce some of it? Late in the week you struggeled with the ramps and the floor to floor. I wonder if the sleeping quarters could be four floors at 9' ftf =36' instead of 3 floors at 12' - 36', and the two rooms next to the class room building could become the lounge areadirectly lit from the couryard and participating in the street life rather than getting indirect light over the top of the bed rooms?

Matt,
One of my concerns with rotating the building as you did and having a solid wall is that I almost feel rejected as I am heading south down Mass Ave . It is almost like I am hitting the wall and told I’m not welcome in that area. I think as you mentioned a study needs to be done on turning the corner and feeling invited into the building. With your building setback to the tracks, I feel like something should be reaching out to me at the entrance, inviting me not only into the building but into the site. You might intend on studying this when you jump back on your site analysis. Something else I notice more with the rotation of the front of the building is the open space in the rear of the lot between your proposed building and the existing building. It’s as if you can walk through this space. What do you envision occurring in this area? Will it be an area that you want people or do you wish to keep them out? Keep up the good work you sketch up king!

Werner,

Thank you for the comments. I will study the lower residential floor to floor heights. I intend for the rest of my program to fill the seemingly large amount of circulation. I stopped with the Revit layout to study this massing of the main studio space more. I will upload some further plans this week.

Jaclyn,

I don't know if I'm understanding your comments fully. I have rotated the main studio space in only one of the 3 concepts. The other two explore cutting the corner different ways. I might need to ask you to expand on your feeling of "cold shoulder" as you approach the building from the North. Please.

Matt,
Is it possible to post an image similar too your third and fifth image on here only traveling south on Mass Avenue. Maybe from the middle of the best buy block. I think the solid curve is holding me up along that edge. However, maybe a shot from that angle will change my mind!

Jaclyn,

I see what you are saying. I have plans for the exhibit hall and will post them tonight. I think the new design will help with the entrance progression.
